When you register to be on the team, Coach Sciplin will send you a text message so you can join our Discord Group. Discord is where we host team communication and videos on how to place the game of Flag Football. The QR code an link to register is in the "How To Register" tab.
Will there be a JV team this year?
We hope so. Being the 2nd year, we hope the have enough girls registered so we can have both a JV and Varsity team.
Can freshman compete on this year’s team.
Yes. Anyone that can show a general understanding of the game and works hard to improve themselves will be given an opportunity to be on the team. Keep in mind, high school level competition does not guarantee playing time.
What is needed to play flag football?
The game of flag football is more than catching footballs and pulling flags. You’ll need to understand the concept of running different route patterns. You’ll need to know the different offensive formations and plays and defensives concepts. There is a lot to learn and the coaches understand everyone is new to football. We’re here to teach the game and answer everyone’s questions.
Can parents be involved with the team?
Absolutely!
Parent involvement is crucial to how high school sports work. It’s a very motivation experience to look in the stands and see family.
We need the following roles filled for the team to function.
-
Team Parents – Help organize team events and aid in communication with other parents. We would like to schedule team dinners and need your help with organization. More about this at the parents meeting.
-
Game Video Recorder – We need someone to record our games to be used as a teaching tool. The only way to improve is to watch how well each person performs against competition. We currently do not have a way to record games. If you have a video camera and time, we could use your help.
-
Down Marker Holder – Want a chance to watch the game up close? This is the role for you. This role is in charge of the down marker so teams can keep track of what down it is.
-
Help is raise money by staffing the concessions stand during the boys' football games.
-
Game Announcer - If you ever wanted to try your hand can calling games, here's your chance. It's basically calling out who made a catch, who made a great flag full and other things to keep the game lively. Going to a boys' football game is a great way to get an idea what to say.
-
Time Clock Operator - This is a pretty easy job. You only need to watch the referee on when to start and stop the play clock. We'll train you on which buttons to push and we'll have a way for you to communicate with us if you have questions.
Equipment
Shoes:
1) Must be soft pliable upper material (i.e., canvas/synthetic) that completely covers the foot and is attached to a one-piece molded composite bottom (i.e., tennis shoes) - CIF Rules.
2) After speaking to our athletic trainer, she's concerned wearing football cleats or soccer shoes provide too much grip that could make our players more prone to knee injuries. She suggested running shoes. After doing some research, the best option seems to be Field Hockey cleats. After speaking to the Field Hockey coach, she said many of her girls wear indoor soccer shoes due to the weight of the Field Hockey cleats. There are several options, we just want to make our girls are health once the season is over.
Gloves:
When buying gloves, look for Receiver Gloves. They can get crazy expensive but there's no need to go overboard. You can get good ones for $30 or less. Many of the guys buy Cutters since they're $19.00. Because they are popular, they may be hard to find. Get what fits.
Mouth Pieces:
A mouth piece is required to be worn at all times when you’re on the field. The school has an arrangement with a local Dentist in Sunnyvale to provide custom fit mouth pieces at no cost to players. The current ideas are to make a team appointment and take care of everyone at once. Once information is confirmed, there may also be individual appointments. Players can buy their own or use a generic mouth piece that will be provided for free.
Flag Football Headgear
I'm looking at securing the funds to purchase protective headgear. Even though flag football is considered a non-contact sport, there is contact similar to basketball and soccer. As with every sport, injuries happen. We're trying to do as much as possible to reduce injuries.
